Russia Brief- The War: Implications for Ukraine and Russia
About the Event:
The war in Ukraine is transforming not only Ukraine. It has
profound implications for Russia, Europe and the United States militarily,
economically and politically. But Kyiv and Moscow see the war in starkly
different terms. Our next "Russia Brief" offers insight from both
perspectives. Join us for a discussion with Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian
politician now living in Ukraine. We'll examine where the war is leading and
its implications for security in Ukraine, Russia, Europe, the U.S. and beyond.
Introduction to be made by Dr. Michael David-Fox, Director
of CERES. Discussion moderated by Jill Dougherty, adjunct professor, Georgetown
University.
About the Guest Speaker:
Ilya Ponomarev is a Russian politician and Ukrainian
entrepreneur, based in Kyiv. As a member of the Russian State Duma in
2007-2016, he represented Novosibirsk, chairing the Innovations and Venture
Capital subcommittee. In 2014, he was
the only member of Parliament to vote against annexation of Crimea. As a
result, he was forced into exile. At the beginning of the 2022 Russian invasion
of Ukraine, he joined the Ukrainian territorial defense forces and created a
media holding "February Morning", which is the only Russian-language
media of today that broadcasts from Kyiv for Russians.
This event is sponsored by Georgetown University’s Center
for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (CERES) and by the Carnegie
Corporation of New York.
